Chiropractors As the 2008 Beijing Olympics come to a close, there have been many recent stories about how Chiropractors have participated in the preparation and rehabilitation of many of the participating athletes. A recent story in MarketWatch followed the story of Jeff Hartwig, who goes on record as the oldest member of the 2008 Olympic U.S. Track and Field team, competing in the pole vault event. A two time Olympian and four-time national champion, Hartwig holds the American indoor pole vaulting record and attributes much of his athletic success to chiropractic care. "The first time I was treated by a chiropractor was akin to a miracle -- a much better option than simply using conventional medicine because my injuries healed faster and my whole body felt better," said Hartwig during an interview conducted a week prior to the Olympic events. Jeff is treated by U.S. Olympic Committee team chiropractor Ted Forcum, D.C. of Tigard, Ore., one of four doctors of chiropractic joining the 62-member U.S. Olympic healthcare team for the 2008 Olympic Games. "Chiropractic fulfills a niche need, not only by treating injuries but also by aiding in recovery and positively impacting athletic performance," said Forcum. "Chiropractors promote active care and treatment with a commitment to healthy progression and rehabilitation." Since the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York, chiropractors have provided healthcare services to elite performers, and this year chiropractors will assume an even greater role in the integrated healthcare team, which includes medical doctors, massage therapists, and certified athletic trainers. In addition to the four chiropractors who will provide care to the U.S. Olympic athletes, chiropractors from around the world will be joining their respective Olympic teams in providing safe and effective healthcare. Team chiropractors will be present from New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, and China among others. doc urges cell phone precaution A prominent cancer researcher's warning to limit cell phone use has rekindled anew the longstanding question over mobile-phone health risks. The media is abuzz with news of the memo from Dr. Ronald B. Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. He sent it to faculty and staff in July, saying, among other things, that children should use cell phones only for emergencies, since their developing organs are the most likely to be sensitive to possible effects of exposure to electromagnetic fields. In his 10-point advisory, Herberman also urges adults to keep phones away from their heads and use speakerphones or wireless headsets. He suggests that people try to avoid constantly carrying their cell phones on their bodies and also try not to keep the devices nearby at night under the pillow or on a nightstand. He even warns against using cell phones in public places like buses because it exposes others to the phone's electromagnetic fields. Herberman notes that the precautions have been reviewed by UPCI experts in neuro-oncology, epidemiology, and neurosurgery, as well as the Center for Environmental Oncology. US Travel Regulations If you are planning your next Seminar excursion, make note that the US Transportation Security Administration has updated their rules and regulations for carry on luggage. Starting August 16, travelers will not have to remove laptops from bags that are deemed "checkpoint-friendly." This category includes "butterfly style," "sleeve style," and "trifold style" bags. These styles were chosen after the TSA asked bag manufacturers to design bags that would not obstruct the image of a laptop when put through an X-ray machine. The new guidelines are meant to "help streamline the security process and better protect laptops". It noted, however, that using one of the "checkpoint-friendly" bags will not guarantee that a flier will not have to unpack his laptop. Gender and Concussion Two new studies find that girls' brains take longer to heal than boys' to heal after a mild injury, and that schoolwork and household activities also affect recovery. One study of 95 high school athletes looked at memory, reaction time and other cognitive tests up to one month after the concussion. Students with moderate activity had the best recovery, according to the study in the Journal of Athletic Training. The most active patients did the worst. A second study of 234 soccer players found that female players fared worse on brain-function tests compared to men with similar injuries. The researchers say the studies suggest that parents, players and coaches should be informed about the symptoms of concussion; that injured athletes not be returned to the field without clearance from a health care professional, who should be on the scene site to assess concussion right away.
